The Church of San Domenico Maggiore is one of the main religious buildings in the historic center of Taranto, located in the Old Town along the axis connecting the oldest areas of the island. It is a Catholic place of worship for liturgical celebrations, prayer, and the preservation of important artistic and devotional testimonies of the city. The building is situated in an area of great historical value: according to tradition, it was built between the 13th and 14th centuries by the Dominicans on pre-existing structures, probably linked to a temple or medieval age buildings. The church and the adjacent convent played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Taranto, serving as a center for preaching and education. The architecture features Gothic elements and subsequent Baroque interventions, with a severe facade, an imposing staircase, and interiors housing altars, sacred works, and symbols of popular devotion. Particularly noteworthy is its connection to the rituals of the Taranto Holy Week: traditionally, the processions of the Addolorata start from the church, among the most heartfelt and evocative events in the city. For visitors, it represents an important stop to understand the historical identity of Taranto, combining artistic interest, spirituality, and local traditions. A visit is recommended along with an itinerary in the Old Town, exploring alleys, historic buildings, views of the Mar Piccolo and the Mar Grande, and other symbolic places like the Cathedral of San Cataldo and the Aragonese Castle.
