The Concathedral of the Great Mother of God in Taranto is one of the main Catholic places of worship in the city and complements the Cathedral of San Cataldo as the seat of the archdiocese. Located in the new city, along Viale Magna Grecia, it serves for the celebration of religious functions, diocesan ceremonies, and pastoral activities of the community. Designed by the architect Gio Ponti and inaugurated in 1970, during a period of urban expansion in Taranto, it represents the dialogue between the historic city and modernity. Its architecture is among the most original of 20th century Italy: the large perforated facade in reinforced concrete, resembling a sail or a seabed, is reflected in the water mirror in front, creating a strong scenographic effect. The interior, simple and bright, enhances the communal dimension of the liturgy and the idea of a church open to the community. From a cultural perspective, it is a significant work of rationalism and Gio Ponti's spiritual research, as well as a symbol of contemporary Taranto. For visitors, it is a recommended stop to understand the modern identity of the city, take photographs of the famous facade, and observe the relationship between sacred architecture, light, and urban space. It is preferable to visit it outside of celebration hours, maintaining a respectful behavior.
