Paolo VI - Case Bianche is an urban area in the northern outskirts of Taranto, born as a neighborhood for residential and popular expansion to meet the city's growth in the second half of the twentieth century. The district of Paolo VI, named after Pope Montini, developed mainly between the 1960s and 1970s, parallel to the industrialization of Taranto and the increase in housing demand related to the steel industry hub. Case Bianche identifies an area characterized by public residential buildings and housing settlements mainly intended for residential purposes. Today, Paolo VI - Case Bianche plays the role of a residential and service neighborhood for a significant portion of the Taranto population. It includes housing, schools, parishes, local businesses, public spaces, and road connections that link it to the city center, industrial area, and other neighborhoods. Despite facing social, urban, and employment issues typical of many Italian suburbs, the neighborhood also represents a place of strong community identity. From a cultural perspective, Paolo VI - Case Bianche preserves the memory of Taranto's industrial expansion era and internal migrations that led many families to settle in new urban areas. Associative life, parish realities, social and sports initiatives still contribute today to strengthening the local fabric and promoting inclusion, participation, and revitalization.
