The Ponte Girevole “San Francesco di Paola” is Taranto’s famous swing bridge, spanning the navigable canal that links the Mar Grande with the Mar Piccolo and connecting the modern Borgo Nuovo with the island of the Old Town. Its main function is both urban and strategic: it carries road and pedestrian traffic, but its two rotating sections can open to allow the passage of Italian Navy vessels heading to and from the naval basin and arsenal.
The first bridge was inaugurated in 1887, during a period in which Taranto was becoming one of Italy’s most important naval cities. The current structure, rebuilt and opened in 1958, preserves the iconic rotating mechanism and is dedicated to Saint Francis of Paola, patron saint of seafarers. Over time it has become one of the strongest symbols of Taranto, reflecting the city’s maritime identity, military history and relationship with the sea.
For visitors, the bridge is a must-see landmark and a scenic viewpoint, especially at sunset or when it opens for naval traffic, a striking event often watched by locals and tourists. Nearby attractions include the Aragonese Castle, the historic Old Town, the Cathedral of San Cataldo, the waterfront promenade and views over both seas of Taranto. Leggi meno
